-End of another innovative project called “I can be a farmer too”

Over the past years, the Citizens’ Association Nešto Više has implemented a large number of projects, and the last one we are especially proud of is the project “I can be a farmer too” implemented in August 2016-December 2016, supported by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Policy. This project is designed to provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to learn more about urban gardening, while at the same time giving them the opportunity to share experiences. Namely, this project gathered people with disabilities from the area of Sarajevo and Mostar. Anyone who had a desire for new knowledge from urban gardening could apply and participate in the project. The aim of the project was to show society that people with disabilities can do whatever they want, even agriculture, provided the environment is adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. This is exactly how the entire property of our Association has been adapted, from trails, driveways, arable land and tolat.  As always, the team of the United Citizens “Nešto Više” decided to think outside the box. I think we managed to prove it through this project as well, because sometimes you just need to think a little differently and you will succeed, if not alone, then together with us. “I can be a farmer too” is an urban gardening project intended for people with disabilities. The workshops were held on our farm, the first in BiH adapted for people with disabilities, especially wheelchair users. The farm is owned by the Association of 1ha with two greenhouses with a total area of 1000m2, with tracks for catrs, raised “tubs” for growing vegatables, beehives and orchards. The farm is located near Mostar in Humilišani. The farm has become a place where one learns, socializes and simply enjoys time together and fresh air.

The topics of the workshops were Growing vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs and mushrooms.

During the workshops, transportation of particpants in specialized vans with wheelschair ramps was organized for 24 participants from Mostar and 24 from Sarajevo. All students attended three worskshops divided into 4 groups of 12 participants, which leads to a total of 48 people with disabilities who have acquired knowledge of agriculture and mastered the skills of urban gardening.

Also, we would like to emphasize that the Association of Citizens “Nešto Više” is not an association of people with disabilities, but we implement projects in an inclusive environment to show that people with disabilities can work equally with “healthy” people if provided adequate environment and encouragement. Therefore, do not wait, but get involved in our project and be part of a good team and new adventures in the near future.
