Gathering at the Center for the Elderly and Disabled Persons in Mostar (RJ DUM and Tekija)

This month (12/5 and 12/13/2023), we held two educational workshops on pruning and maintenance of shrubs and trees at the Center for the Elderly and Disabled Persons in Mostar (RJ DUM and Tekija). The courtyards of these two centers are truly beautiful but required intervention in terms of pruning and removing dry and broken branches.

In collaboration with JP Parkovi Mostar and with the help of our volunteers, the courtyards received the treatment they deserve. Fruit trees, roses, and decorative pines were pruned, overgrown shrubs were thinned and trimmed, grass was mowed, leaves were collected, and olive trees and cypresses were planted. Parkovi’s staff had their hands full, making three trips to dispose of the green waste.

This workshop also had an educational aspect. We demonstrated to our volunteers and center staff how to prune specific plants, prepare and disinfect scissors, handle machinery and tools. We also touched upon composting and prepared the existing structure for green waste disposal.

Meanwhile, children from the Sunčani Most kindergarten prepared a performance for the center’s residents, bringing smiles to their faces.

The Center for the Elderly and Disabled Persons in Mostar is the oldest (founded in 1930) institution for the social care of elderly and disabled persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2005, by decision of the Mostar City Council, two previously registered institutions in the city merged: the Public Institution Home for the Elderly and Disabled Persons Mostar, located at Tekija 40, and the institution Center for Social Care of the Elderly Persons at Fra Franje Miličevića Street 45. Today, the two separate units together accommodate 120 users, and they are always in need of supplies such as hygiene products, canned food, fruits, vegetables, teas, coffee…

Aware of these needs, we issued a call for donations on the day we held the workshop in the DUM work unit. We would like to express our gratitude once again to the companies and organizations that prepared donations last week, which were distributed between both units of the Center (Najvest, Zdrav život – Kinezis Association, Eko Jasmina, FabrikaCoffee Mostar, Croatian Post Mostar, Pekare Suncokret, EkoDizajn, and Permaculture Estate Nešto Više) 🙏
