Citizens’ Association Something More is 18.09.2014. organized a meeting entitled “Meetings of employers and staff in agriculture” for the first time in Mostar, in the premises of the Faculty of Agro-Mediterranean University Džemal Bijedić. The meeting was organized within the project “Support to Agricultural Development in Herzegovina” (2013-2016), which is financially supported by USAID, and implemented by UG Nešto Više.
The first meeting was attended by representatives of 20 employers from Herzegovina, 30 unemployed and final year students, and representatives of the Employment Service of HNK-Ž who played a key role in establishing contact with the unemployed. Employers were representatives of private companies, educational institutions, government institutions, cooperatives, and associations and federations of associations, while participants seeking employment in the profession included final year students, and persons ranging from high school to master’s degree. All participants were given written material that included information on employers and biographies of the unemployed.
The purpose of such events is to provide potential employers, the unemployed and students in the field of agriculture, food and processing the opportunity to meet and introduce each other. In this way, potential employers have the opportunity to be promoted, informed and directly in contact with educated staff, while unemployed people and students can be informed about the variety of opportunities and potential employers who employ similar staff, and what knowledge and skills are required for successful employment. . The aim is to enable direct contact and exchange of information of interest to both parties.
During the discussion, both employers and the unemployed spoke about the difficulties they encounter in everyday life, but also about positive, encouraging examples. Several interesting topics were highlighted: the need for more opportunities to gain practical experience and further professional development through non-formal education, the need for continuous advancement and lifelong learning, willingness to actively dedicate to profession and production, determination to fight for a job with their engagement, entrepreneurial spirit and clear ideas and the use of opportunities for self-employment through agriculture.
It is interesting to single out the open invitation sent by the Association of Agricultural Associations Konjic and Jablanica and the Agricultural Cooperative Jablanica to all interested persons in the profession to contact them in order to gain practical work experience using existing infrastructure and resources. The possibility of joint realization of entrepreneurial ideas that are market-justified is also open.
It was generally concluded that there is a need to work on improving the existing negative image of farmers and agriculture in general.
