-Training of civil servants in measures to support the adaptation of agricultural business to drought held at the Hotel Termag in Jahorina on December 27 and 28, 2011

The training was organized within the project entitled Capacity Building of Agricultural Businesses in Drought Adaptation funded by USAID, and implemented by CRP Tuzla and Nešto Više.

The aim of the training was to gather officials in state bodies and bring them closer to the issue of the impact of drought on agricultural businesses. This will provide a better understanding of the problems faced by farmers, a better insight into modern technologies for irrigation systems, as well as a more pragmatic approach to this issue when creating appropriate measures to support farmers in the fight against drought. The training was attended by 25 participants, namely representatives of municipalities, the Ministries of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of FBiH and RS and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH.

The training included the following elements:

-Presentation of the project Capacity building of agricultural businesses in drought adaptation,

-Presentation of the study Analysis of the vulnerability of the fruit and vegetable sector to drought

-Benefits of investing in irrigation systems

-Presentation of a modern technical solution for drought adaptation-a practical example of the system in Gracanica,

-Drought adapatation measures in agriculture- Plant adaptation,

-Technical solutions in drought adaptation in agriculture

-Impact of the construction of irrigation systems on the environment and mitigation measures.

The training concluded that further education of civil servants is needed, especially in the field of environmental impact assessment.

In this regard, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH called on USAID to support such activity.

AS a result of the training, an initiative as launched for the competent departments in the municipalities to request the allocation of a certain part of the budget funds to support the construction of pilot irrigation systems, according to examples supported by USAID.
