We present to you the results of the research on women’s representation in politics in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The analysis was prepared within the project implemented by the citizen association NEŠTO VIŠE called “Empowering Women: Right to Joint Property/Inheritance and Political Engagement”, supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).
Women’s representation in politics is of essential importance for achieving gender equality and strengthening democratic institutions. Political participation of women remains a challenge in Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite legal quotas that ensure minimum representation. This research project analyzes changes in women’s representation in the 2024 local elections, with a special focus on successful candidates for mayoral positions.
Through the analysis of collected data and election results, the research identifies obstacles women face during political engagement. It also draws on previous studies and current trends to provide a comprehensive overview of the situation and identify areas for further progress.
The survey conducted as part of this research included 134 respondents of different genders, ages, and professional backgrounds. Respondents come from urban areas such as Sarajevo, Tuzla, Mostar, and Banja Luka, as well as rural areas, allowing a comparative analysis of political challenges in different contexts. The research focuses on factors such as financial and cultural barriers, traditional views, media visibility, and women’s political experience.
Special emphasis is placed on the specific challenges faced by young women in politics, as well as the importance of support from family and friends for their political engagement. The research results serve as a basis for formulating concrete recommendations and policies that will improve women’s participation in political processes.
The aim of this project is to contribute to a better understanding of women’s political participation in local communities, identify key challenges, and propose measures to increase their representation. In this way, the project seeks to strengthen the democratic process and promote gender equality in the political life of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
