In Sarajevo on 03.12.2011. the International Volunteer Day was marked with a special all-day program.
Volunteers marched from the City Hall and walked the main streets of the city, accompanied by the Sarajevo Drum Orchestra, to Sarajevo Children’s Square where they took a millennium photo. After that, they went to the Youth Center where they celebrated their day.
The goal of the organizers was to present and promote the principles of volunteerism to the general public, and to express gratitude to all volunteers who are actively involved in everyday activities and thus make BiH. society a better place to live.
Twelve local civil society organizations, dealing with youth in the Sarajevo Canton and the City of East Sarajevo, with the support of the UN Volunteer Program in BiH, together with volunteers from BiH and six countries in Europe and the world, celebrated the holiday, which is celebrated worldwide on December 5. The UN General Assembly declared December 5 as International Volunteer Day as a reminded of the day when the UN Program was created in 1970. The European Commission declared 2011 the year of volunteerism with the aim of increasing this type of work and raising awarenesss of its value.
UG “Nešto Više” staff was involved in the planning and implementation of this event from the very beginning. List of organizations that were included: Caritas of the Bishops’ Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dobrotvor, Humanitarian-charitable organization Kruh Sv. Ante, Institute for Youth Development KULT, LA Benevolencija, Merhamet, Archdiocesan Center for Youth Patoral “John Paul II”, Youth Council East Sarajevo, Association of Organizations for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities FBiH “Sumero”, Association for the Prevention of Addiction Narko No, Citizens’ Association Nešto Više and United Nations Volunteers.
