Saturday, Jul 11 2015 – Today, a practical workshop on urban agriculture on the topic of composting and production of earthworms was held on the experimental estate of UG Nešto Više in Humilišani, Mostar.
The workshop was attended by 15 hard-working volunteers. Workshop leader mr. sci. Alisa Hadžiabulić from the Faculty of Agromediterranean Mostar held an introductory lecture on the method of breeding red California earthworms, and instructed the participants in the little secrets of creating and maintaining a litter.
At the same time as the participants heard about the importance of earthworms and the methodology of earthworm production, work was done on assembling the first worm house on the experimental property.
In the practical part of the workshop, participants first prepared all the necessary components for laying a new bed of worms: soil, manure, straw, pieces of cardboard soaked in water, chopped organic waste (watermelon peel, remnants of apples, pears, stalks, etc.), chopped / crushed egg shells, and semi-finished compost from a previously organized composter.
After the house was finished, the participants positioned it together with the existing composter in the shade of 70-year-old linden trees, and then, according to the leader’s instructions, organized the components necessary for earthworms to create earthworms, as one of the best and most valuable fertilizers we can use in agriculture and horticulture.
After the workshop, the participants visited the demonstration farm and got acquainted with other facilities offered at this place intended for educating all interested in agriculture and growing food, flowers and herbs (growing vegetables in a greenhouse1, hydroponic growing in a greenhouse 2, organic gardens, orchard , flower garden, hive, etc.).
The workshop was held within the project Support to Agricultural Development in Herzegovina, implemented by UG Nešto Više, and supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
